Warm greetings from Amoy!
Many folks in China, like me, have a Lenovo, and I love my X220T Tablet--especially writing on the screen for class lectures, rather than using blackboards or PPT. But I've been frustrated with various Lenovo issues (some software, and two hard drives went out within a year--I wonder if they buy them used?)
Today, the Lenovo decided to quit charging the battery! I knew the battery was fine (this is a new Lenovo), and the charger was fine. The PC said the battery health was good--but no charging, and it was down to 9%. I was so frustrated at Lenovo--and then found out it is Microsoft's fault--a problem with Windows 7 that has been around for two years, at least! Why could Microsoft not have fixed it by now?
Fortunately, after searching the internet, and trying many things, I found the solution on Jeffrey Palermo's blog--though I will add a step or two he left out (assuming we knew too much).
These are Jeffrey Palermo's steps--with just my note to make one part easier):
1. Disconnect the A/C power supply.
2. Shut down the computer.
3. Remove the battery
4. Connect the A/C power supply
5. Start the computer.
6. Under Battery... (here's the problem, Jeff--where is "battery?" I searched, and finally remembered it is under Control Panel, then System, then Device Driver, then Battery)
7. Click on Battery (at the top), and then right click on all entries that say Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery, and select uninstall.
8. Shut the computer down.
9. Disconnect the A/C power supply.
10. Insert the battery.
11. Insert the A/C power supply.
12. Start the computer.
13. It should be fixed--thanks to Jeffrey Palermo! Visit his blog to read what others have experienced, and solutions for those with Samsung computers, etc.
And my apologies to Lenovo for not giving them the benefit of the doubt. Let's just hope Microsoft gets there act together. I've no idea how they can roll out Windows 8 when 7 still has so many bugbears (After two years, I still cannot play simple MP3 files with Windows 7 Professional Multimedia Player--network errors, it says, though the network is completely disconnected. And to think I paid extra for that.... ).
Enjoy Amoy

wow, thanks for posting, just got my lenovo home and was wondering what the problem with the charger was. works for windows 8 as well.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Just ordered a new battery and still wasn't charging. I read all kinds of "fixes" that were way off track (motherboard issues, Ebay battery issues etc) This fixed the problem! Thanks so much for posting - you will make many people happy :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this. I had the exact same message - from the battery icon in the system tray "28 % available (plugged in, not charging)" - on my Lenovo T420 w/ Windows 7. I followed the steps you posted and the battery is charging again. Already up to 30%. Cheers!
ReplyDeletehhhheeeeelp
ReplyDeletei uninstal what you tell us to, but when i restart i found them reinstalled and still not working. what am i doing wrong? lenovo t71
U uninstall first. Then restart. And again go to battery and check whether it is their or not. If their try scan for hardware changes. Then u uninstall. And don't restart.
DeleteHello ! I tried to uninstall but when i restart it gets installed again. What is the issue ?
ReplyDeleteme too!!

ReplyDeleteHi...i am using lenovo G560 from last two yrs.Suddenly my battery was not working. Battery icon is always showing that 99% is available but when i removed the power chard my laptop gets off..pls suggest me whether i have to go for new charger or repair the laptop...

try this method with confidence IT WORKS !!! U ROCK MAN
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting such detail instructions! My work Lenovo runs XP and I was getting worried that my battery would not allow me tofinish my presentation. The only difference was that instead of Device Driver it says Device Mana
ReplyDeleteMake sure you check the "Energy Management" icon in the taskbar, if it's set to "optimize battery lifespan" then it sometimes doesn't charge the battery on purpose to...well...optimize the battery lifespan. I have a u510 ideapad, and if I change the setting to "maximize battery life" instead, then it immediately starts charging the battery. Kind of smart, actually, as leaving your battery at 100% all the time reduces battery life. If you leave your laptop plugged in all the time this may be a wise option. Of course this may not fix everyone's problem...
ReplyDeleteTry this. It worked for me. Choose energy management icon from the taskbar (located in the same menu area as "plugged in not charging" - the icon looks like a white car in a red square). Under the red battery section, select "maximize battery life." I believe the "Optimize battery life" option allows the computer to almost fully deplete the battery before recharging it. Although frequently inconvenient if you like to grab your computer and go, this process of near full discharge, then recharge, increases the lifespan of the battery. Hope this helps.

Hi there,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this port. Wish I could compensate you in a better way , than just a mere THANKS. I called Lenovo first.. got an estimate of $500+, same problem as everyone... battery was not charged... unit was plugged in for the past 16hrs. I followed your advice... and within 3 minutes.. it is now charging.. Thank you again..
I think if you follow steps 5, 6 and the below new step it works fine:
ReplyDeleteNew Step: Right click on Batteries, click "Sacn for hardware changes".
This worked for me. Anyways, thanks to the Author!
Thanks! This really helps :-)
ReplyDeletethank you so much! all i did were steps 6 and 7 and it worked fine. :) totally saved me from all the trouble.

How to charge tablet battery
ReplyDeleteWe are a group of tablet battery gurus that have a very profound knowledge of tablet batteries and are determined to help people in understanding the best ways to get the maximum out of the batteries of their favorite devices
I too had this problem with a Lenovo and instead of switching off etc, I simply removed the battery whilst booted, removed the Microsoft ACPI battery from the Device Manager, re-inserted the battery and refreshed the device manager. I am now charging and thank goodness for that!
ReplyDeleteI tried this and it did not work. I left my lenovo unplugged while on vacation for 4 days, and I came back and plugged it in to charge. It says 'plugged in, charging' but remains at 0% and has even after being plugged in for nearly 7 hours. Help?
ReplyDeleteAmazing ... my battery returns working well
ReplyDeleteHey, your method worked like a charm, thanks! (ideapad z580, win8 64bit)
ReplyDeleteAlso a tip: if you did this steps, and the battery percentage jumps to 100%, do not worry. In my case, the battery did charged up in spite of the feedback. Good luck!
Thank you , Thank You, Thank You!!! a million times again....this saved me a lot of further frustrations from those wanna be fixers!...Thanx a bunch...This was the easiest-self explanatory-few minutes fixing steps ever...Worked like magic.!

ReplyDeleteWorked perfectly on my Lenovo V460! Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI could use some help with my Ienovo s10-3t, I tried what you posted about the battery that did not help. wondering if I need to buy a new battery any advise would be a great help Thank you.
ReplyDeletei did the same in my lenovo s400. it is working but when my battery is fully discharged. it does stop from charging and then i have to again and again repeat the same. Please provide me the permanent solution. Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteWell done. Fix worked on a Toshiba 420 running Win 7 SP1.
ReplyDeleteBatter currently charging, for how long we will see.
There is an option in the Lenovo power management for optimizing battery health that prevents it from going to a full 99% charge (at least in Win8, may be in their Win7 drivers too). To get to it, go into the power management screen, then go into advanced power management. There should be an extra tab across the top for the Lenovo Power Management. Click to that tab and you may see new options, or a button to enable the Lenovo Power Management that will pop out a new app when you click it. Toggle off the option to optimize battery health and it will start charging to full again.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, thanks For posting just got my lenovoB460 Window 7 and was wondering what the problem with the charger was.I had exact same message from the battery icon in the system 2% available(Plugged not charging)I followed the steps you posted and the battery is charging again. you will make many people happy.
ReplyDeleteThank you so Much
Thanks a lot for this post, you saved a lot of time for me and i wish you the best guys!!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Greece, and best luck :)
Greetings! Okay, I'm happy that some of you received the results that you did, but my G560's battery died (I think) when I spoke with a techy, they told me that the blinking red light was an indication of a dead battery. (Had it for a bit over 2 1/2 years). Purchased new one, laptop worked fine.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that it was not CHARGING! Long story short, no power, nothing.
If what I read is correct, how am I supposed to perform these tasks with no power. It doesn't appear that my G560 works while plugged in, with or without battery now! And this is a new battery!
I've been out of my mind for days now, I don't know whether to throw this thing out the window, return battery (maybe it's bad), but the new battery just gives me the blinking red light!
What the heck gives?
Worked for my Lenovo Y400. I left my charger at work and tried to use one from my housemate's old lenovo. I had 9% left and it kind of worked (said it was charging but didn't charge - then failed to provide enough power for my computer to stay on while I played a grahics heavy video game)... so next day I got my original charger from the office and it would no longer charge the battery either.
ReplyDeleteThis worked...
I just wonder if it would have made the other charger charge the batter too.
Thanks! Mine was stuck on 4%. I followed your steps, and now it's charging just fine.
ReplyDeleteAlright, here goes again...
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone out there know how I can determine whether my G560's brand new battery will not charge?
The battery came with a bit of a charge, I plugged it in not realizing it was not taking a charge. Now with absolutely no power, I cannot power up! Seems unlike an Apple, you can't use your laptop even with it plugged in.
My next move is to send back the "new" battery and request a replacement, but if there is any other way I can check this out, I would appreciate it.
Thank you in advance.
I have done all the steps you have told..mine is lenovo G460. Its stcuk on 8%. and showing "plugged in not charging". The system started giving problem the day I have upgraded it from Xp to windows7...
ReplyDeleteI am fed up of trying all the solutions given ..
Please HELP...
Hello i am using Lenovo tab a1000 , my problem is after full battery drained (0%) my tab not getting charge (Twice it happened)

ReplyDeleteThanks so much, I can see my laptop battery charging :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!! This worked.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting, and for the clarity. Took five minutes and worked.
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to wonder if lenovo deserves the high acclaims some salesman state.. Although this appears to be some wild Microsoft issue, It's amazing how many lenovos are listed here with this issue..
ReplyDeleteI think they need to re-work their power management program.
This was extremely helpful!
ReplyDeleteI had exactly the same issues with my Lenovo V560 Laptop, but this fix resolved it instantly.
Thank you very much for posting this. You just saved me a whole lot of money for a new battery!
Hi, when AC power is disconnected, it didn't work for me. When I replaced the battery when AC is plugged in then I could solve in idapad s400.Maybe it may need an extra reboot after Energy Management settings. But I think this is a rare probability. I can use the battery now, thank you all.
ReplyDeleteCaution: When AC is plugged in don't do it if you don't know about electricity and the hazards, don't touch the pins.
ReplyDeletemany thanks!
ReplyDeletemany thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem with my Lenovo S400. I did what you suggested however after a while, the battery stopped charging again. I tried repeating the steps but now the ACPI Compliant Control Method tab is missing. Battery still wont charge. Need a permanent fix. HELP!!!
ReplyDeleteHad 56% left on battery......... This worked till 60% and then stopped for good. So,this clearly does not work, has anyone got a fix for this problem plz?
ReplyDeleteHey ,
ReplyDeletePlease let me know if this works if this solution works for Windows 8
OMG!!!It worked perfect on Lenovo Y580 win7.

ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteMine seems to be doing the opposite. similar to the comment of an anonymous person before ["Hi...i am using lenovo G560 from last two yrs.Suddenly my battery was not working. March 13, 2013 at 10:21 AM], my battery is 100% charged but cannot use the battery when i unplug the AC adaptor. last night I used the laptop with the battery only. Mine is a Lenovo G550. Hope you can suggest something for me. Thank you! (my email: josellani.rmt@gmail.com)
It worked for me. Lenovo y550 win 8.1 64x ..
ReplyDeleteThanks a million :)
My problem is different. I put a new battery in, genuine Lenovo battery. It charges at 0.17A and taking forever to charge. I plugged my old battery in, it then charges at 1.7A. I have tried different chargers, both 65W and 90W versions. Results the same. Any advice?
ReplyDeleteYou're a freakn lifesaver!!! I am a PhD student and my laptop is my LIFE! You saved me a lot of work and time so THANK YOU!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post, it worked great!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have a solution for this plugged in and not charging problem on a Lenovo S400? My battery is completely dead i.e. my machine only works off the AC. I have tried every "fix" found on the net - restore / refresh / the solution in this thread / a battery from another perfectly working S400 / remove and re-insert battery while on AC - but nothing has helped. it cannot be a battery issue as the battery from my laptop works perfect on another Lenovo S400. PLEASE HELP if you have a solution. Thank you
ReplyDeleteThe driver uninstall method is likely NOT the reason this happens on lenovo laptops. It's most likely a program called "Energy Manager". Open it, and disable "conservation mode". The battery has a longer lifespan if the charge is kept at a maximum of 55-60% (if this is where your charging stops, this is definitely your issue). That is what conservation mode is designed to do.
ReplyDeleteYoga 2 13 how? it is internal battery. I can not fix with yoga 2 13. Helop!help!
ReplyDeleteI don't usually comment on random blog posts I find on the internet, but I find it amazing how this post is 2+ years old and yet it helped me with my issue on my Lenovo Y510P.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, thank you for the guide, I'm very grateful for it.
Thank you so much for posting this!
ReplyDeleteThanks alot! It worked for me too! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks very much for posting :) my battery stopped at 24% without charging. I have a Lenovo Y510. By using these steps my battery is charged now by 100% after a couple of hours. Thanks again

ReplyDeleteHad my Windows 7 laptop for 6 years, and suddenly had this problem yesterday even though this battery was reading "good" condition. Apparently Windows Update broke it when I updated recently because this fix worked perfectly. Thanks for sharing your fix, it's still helping us 2 years later!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot !

ReplyDeleteand another 'thank you'!!
ReplyDeleteThis did the job for my Lenovo Y510P.
Cheers from Jerusalem,

Oh, how silly.
ReplyDeleteThere's actually nothing wrong with my Lenovo Y510P. It's the 'Energy Management' program!!
If it's set on 'Optimized Battery Health', then the battery limits charging to 60% of its full capacity. This can reduce the battery degradation and extend the battery lifespan.

Thank you so much! Worked great on my X220.
ReplyDeleteJust used it, and it works, finally my battery is charging beyond 55% now, else it used to stop at 55% always.

ReplyDeleteI have a Lenovo X220 and recently bought a new battery. it immediately started to exhibit this "won't charge" problem. i followed these steps, and it worked! however, the next day, the problem returned. i applied the fix again, and again it worked only for a day
help! :)
I just received a generic battery from Battery Dr for my thinkpad x220 tablet. I was hoping this would solve the problem but it didn't. I know other people have been able to charge generic batteries so hopefully I can figure out a way before I trash this computer. I'm not paying Lenovo $200 for a battery.
ReplyDeleteHere are few things to try:
ReplyDelete1. Check if the battery works in another laptop.
2. Clean the battery contacts if you’re comfortable with it. Also check if it’s damaged or bent.
3. Try another battery. If this lenovo battery works, then you know for sure that the other battery is faulty. If the system is under warranty you can get battery replacement from Sony
4. Seems like flashing BIOS has helped a great deal of people facing similar problem.
Please fully charge (24 hours) and discharge for several times to see how long the battery working time is. hope can help you, thanks
I am so thankful for this post. Did exactly the directions. I only had to go to Device Manager and uninstall one file, then put battery back in and voila! THANK YOU!!

its help my lenovo s210 ideapad (57% plugin ,not charging) problem...
ReplyDeletethanks a lot..
I spent many hours going through all possible combinations of the above with no success , so I removed the battery and discharged it to 6.8v (20%) then refitted and all is good again , I hope this tip might help if you have run out of ideas , My opinion on this whole problem was that it's caused by having two programs trying to do the battery management so I have not restored the Lenovo battery manager.
ReplyDeleteAlso saved me! Thanks for the post
